Dear Friend of St. Isidore's,

I am writing this as the students are making their final push in finishing up finals for the fall semester 2013.  As usual, this semester has been an eventful one at St. Isidore's; and as the Solemnity of Christmas draws very near, the joy and gratitude of the season is ever present.

12 Joys of Christmas 2013: (A Fall Semester Reflection in no particular order...)

12. Finals are almost complete!

11. The St. Isidore's Staff are enjoying good health. (Despite a broken arm and a few cold bugs.)

10. Pathways XX Retreat was a great success!

9. Daily Mass attendance has averaged around 70-80 students.

8. St. Isidore's is preparing to launch our revamped website in the New Year!

7. Thanks to all of you, we've completed another successful Phonathon.

6. Cosmetic Renovation Planning (tile, carpet, paint, etc.) for the Chapel/Offices for Summer 2014 is underway.

5. RCIA currently has 42 catechumens/candidates preparing for the Easter Sacraments.

4. The Cats are Bowl Bound! (Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, December 28, Tempe, AZ)

3. 60 students filled 23 1-hr. slots of Weekly Eucharistic Adoration throughout the semester.

2. St. Isidore's will host the Kansas Catholic College Student Convention in February of 2015.

1. And the number one Joy of Christmas 2013 is the ever-expanding numbers of you: the Alumni, Family, and Friends that make up the St. Isidore's Family spanning Nation and even Worldwide.  Peace and Blessings to you as we conclude another year, and may God richly Bless your 2014.

Blessings,

Fr. Jarett Konrade

Graduating Senior Spotlight: Brice Walsten

Graduating Senior Brice Walsten

Brice Walsten from Mulvane, KS graduated this semester with a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He will be working at The Viking Corporation in Rose Hill, KS.  This company makes abrasive blast and washer systems that are used in manufacturing environments.

Due to the busy and stressful nature of being an engineering student, Brice found that St. Isidore's was a place he could go to find peace among all the stress and business of college life. "To me the greatest gift that St. Isidore's offers is providing a daily Mass at 10 pm, for there is truly no better way to end a long day than by spending some time with our Lord."

"St. Isidore's provided me the opportunities to grow as a Catholic man through retreats, Knights of Columbus, bible studies, vocation dinners, and so much more.  St. Isidore's was one of the biggest factors in shaping who I became while I was a student at K-State."

He expressed that what he will miss most will be the people, staff and students. "The best thing about the people at St. Isidore's is their willingness to set aside their own crosses in life to help one another with their struggles.  I think this attitude can be attributed to the spiritual direction provided by both the chaplains that were at St. Isidore's while I was at K-State and their own willingness to sacrifice their time for the St. Isidore's community" explained Brice.

If he could offer one piece of advice it would be this, "Don't underestimate the impact of even the smallest of your actions.  You may never know the implications of a smile at a stranger on campus, a note to someone going through a rough time, or even just a phone call to check on a friend."  Brice went on to quote St. Therese of Lisieux, 'Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and it all for love.'

Christmas Caroling

"The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear!"  This piece of advice was provided by Buddy the elf from the movie 'Elf' and was what about 30 students gathered to do this month.

The students traveled to two nursing homes and the hospice house and sang traditional Christmas carols for the residents to enjoy.  After singing, the students then returned to St. Isidore's where they had fun decorating and eating Christmas cookies.

Dear Friend of St. Isidore's,

Phonathon, Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner, and the regular football season have all come and gone and it is the time of year that we reflect on all that we have for which to be thankful.  (Just a few things.)  I'm thankful that I broke my right arm and not my left (left-handed).  I'm thankful for having had the opportunity to join the football team on the sidelines for home games.  I'm thankful that the Wildcats are bowl bound.  I'm thankful to be a Catholic priest serving at the best Catholic Student Center in the nation. (Perhaps I'm biased, I don't think so.)  But most of all I'm thankful to God for all of you and your immense generosity in making what we do here at St. Isidore's a possibility.  Thanks and may God richly bless your Advent Season.

Blessings,

Fr. Jarett Konrade

Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens

Photo of featured student, Nate Hoffman (wearing the blue polo), while eating and talking with a few of the senior citizens.

In true Thanksgiving style, senior citizens and students joined together and enjoyed a delicious feast of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, roll, salad and desserts while also sharing stories and memories with each other.

"I love being able to sit down and talk with these men and women and getting to hear about all their experiences.  I also love being with those couples who have been married twice as long as I've been alive!" explained Nate Hoffman who is a Junior in Accounting. This is one of his favorite events of the year and looks forward to participating in it.

"I enjoy helping the women up the front stairs and taking their coats at the door; then during dinner I just sit and eat and visit with the couples around me.  I couldn't ask for a better volunteer job than that!"

There were 56 seniors and around 25 students that attended this year's Thanksgiving dinner.

Frank Schmeidler and Heather Augustine also were there to provide entertainment by performing some of the choir's favorite songs and then leading the group in a sing-a-long.

"This is always such a fun and uplifting event for students and our senior citizen guests alike.  We enjoy interacting with them and serving them, and they enjoy spending time with our wonderful students.  It is an event that both groups look forward to each year,"  explained Campus Minister Maria O'Halloran.

Thank You!

Thank you to our parents, alumni, and friends who pledged a donation to our 22nd annual Phonathon!
